Start with company search and jurisdictionCode: "us-ny". Pass the name as companyName, a registration number as companyNumber, or both to narrow the result. Here companyNumber is read as dosId.

Fields

To say exactly what you mean, send an advancedQuery instead. New York (US) understands these fields:

FieldWhat it does
nameEntity name to search for.
dosIdNYDOS DOS ID (1–8 digit numeric string).

Company identifiers

Search by passing the registration number as companyNumber — it is matched against the schemes this register can search on, so you do not name the scheme yourself. Not every scheme below is searchable; the rest label the values returned in a company’s identifiers.

IdentifierAppears asFormat
NY DOS ID
New York Department of State unique entity identifier (DOS ID), 1–8 digits. Issued by NYDOS Division of Corporations at the time of filing.

Identifier notes

  • A New York DOS ID with leading zeros and the same number without them are the same identifier — for example, "00069033" and "69033" refer to the identical company. Strip leading zeros before comparing, deduplicating, or looking up records by this identifier.

Gotchas

TrapWhat happens
Foreign date is the NY registrationFor a foreign corporation or LLC, the incorporation date is New York's registration date, not the entity's actual formation date in its home state or country.
At most one officerNew York discloses at most one officer — a combined Chairman/CEO — and only for corporations; LLCs, partnerships, and not-for-profits never have it. Even when present, the name can lag up to two years, updating only at the next biennial statement.
DBAs share the names listTrade names (DBAs) and prior legal names share one alternative-names list, with no way to tell an active DBA from one discontinued years ago.
Foreign entities have no codeA foreign corporation or LLC (formed elsewhere, registered to do business in New York) has a legal form but no standardized ISO entity-form code — that code belongs to its actual jurisdiction of formation.
Search knows three statusesLive company search recognizes only three statuses — Active, Inactive, and Suspended — with no separate Discontinued value. A company that shows as Discontinued in its full company report may appear simply as Inactive when you find it through search.
Search spans every statusName search returns matches across every status, not just active ones — filter yourself if you want only active results. Search results never include addresses; retrieve the full company report for that.
'Business' address is the officer'sIn the full report, the "business" address is the Chairman/CEO's own address from the biennial statement, not the company's office — use physical/principal-office instead. The "mailing" address is New York's Service of Process address, not a general mailing address.

Glossary

TermMeaning
SuspendedThe company's registration is temporarily suspended rather than closed. This status is rare and appears almost exclusively after the involuntary annulment of a not-for-profit corporation.
DiscontinuedThe company withdrew or surrendered its own registration, typically voluntarily. It is a distinct status from the broader "Inactive" bucket (which covers dissolution, cancellation, and termination), but a Discontinued company is no longer an active, operating entity.
Chairman / Chief Executive OfficerThe single, combined officer title New York's register discloses for corporations. It comes from the company's biennial statement rather than a full officer or director list, and it is the only officer-level detail New York publishes for a company.
