Start with company search and jurisdictionCode: "us-nc". Pass the name as companyName, a registration number as companyNumber, or both to narrow the result. Here companyNumber is read as sosId.

Fields

To say exactly what you mean, send an advancedQuery instead. North Carolina (US) understands these fields:

FieldWhat it does
nameOrganizational name to search for.
sosIdNorth Carolina SOS Identification Number (SOSID) to search for — canonically 7-digit zero-padded (e.g. '0472730').

Examples

{  "jurisdictionCode": "us-nc",  "advancedQuery": {    "name": "Bank of America"  }}

North Carolina (US) also accepts sosId.

Company identifiers

Search by passing the registration number as companyNumber — it is matched against the schemes this register can search on, so you do not name the scheme yourself. Not every scheme below is searchable; the rest label the values returned in a company’s identifiers.

IdentifierAppears asFormat
NC SOSID
North Carolina Secretary of State Identification Number (SOSID) — the public per-entity identifier, canonically a 7-digit zero-padded string (e.g. '0472730'). Values are normalized to digits only, zero-padded to 7. The 7-digit width is an observed convention (every sampled entity, '0081920'–'3225949') rather than a documented rule, so the pattern tolerates up to 8 digits. Not to be confused with the registry's internal profile key, which is also bare numeric, already exceeds 7 digits, and is resolved at request time rather than stored as identity.

Gotchas

TrapWhat happens
Code only for domestic entitiesThe ISO legal-form code is populated only for Domestic entities. A Foreign entity — formed elsewhere, registered here to do business — gets a legal-form category but no code, since the code belongs to the jurisdiction that formed it.
Three role codes onlyRole codes exist only for President, Chairman of the Board, and Registered Agent, and only for certain legal forms. Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and C-suite titles are always uncoded — match on role name, not code.
One entry per office heldA person holding multiple offices gets a separate entry per role, not one merged record — dedupe on person plus role, not person alone.
Two mailing addresses, one type"Mailing address" and "Registered Mailing address" both come back as the same type — not deduplicated. Check the source label to distinguish them.
Agent type unmarkedThe registered agent on a North Carolina company can be either a person or a company, and the register gives no marker distinguishing the two — so occasionally an organization without an obvious corporate suffix in its name (or an unusual personal name) may come back classified as the other type. Don't rely on this field alone to determine whether the agent is an individual.

Glossary

TermMeaning
Active-Not CurrentThe company is behind on its required annual filings but remains legally active — a step toward dissolution, not an end state.
Admin. DissolvedNorth Carolina administratively struck the company's registration for non-compliance (for example, unfiled annual reports). This is normally reversible by reinstating with the state.
Auto DissolveThe company was dissolved by an act of the state legislature, not for any compliance failure of its own.
Admin CancelledThe company's original registration filing was voided, typically over an unpaid fee — a failed registration, not a business that was wound up.
MultipleNorth Carolina is reporting more than one status at once for this entity (for example, both dissolution and revocation simultaneously) rather than a single state; expect the normalized status fields to come back unset when you see this value.
