How to search
Start with company search and jurisdictionCode: "fo". Pass the name as companyName, a registration number as companyNumber, or both to narrow the result. Here companyNumber is read as registrationNumber.
Fields
To say exactly what you mean, send an advancedQuery instead. Faroe Islands understands these fields:
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
name | Company name to search for. The registered name includes the legal-form prefix the register prints, e.g. 'P/F Atlantic Petroleum'. |
registrationNumber | Skráseting Føroya registration number, e.g. '2695'. An 'S' prefix, as the ownership overview renders it, is accepted and removed. |
Examples
{ "jurisdictionCode": "fo", "advancedQuery": { "name": "Atlantic Petroleum" }}Faroe Islands also accepts registrationNumber.
Company identifiers
Search by passing the registration number as companyNumber — it is matched against the schemes this register can search on, so you do not name the scheme yourself. Not every scheme below is searchable; the rest label the values returned in a company’s identifiers.
| Identifier | Appears as | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Company Registration Number | fo_company_registration_number | No fixed format |
Identifier notes
- The registration number is the identifier to use, but you'll see it written two ways: the company registry prints it bare (e.g. 2695), while the ownership register shows it with a leading "S" inside its listings (e.g. S2695). Both forms refer to the same company.
- A company's identifiers can include a second field used only for ownership and beneficial-owner lookups. It is null for a large share of companies — those no longer on the current register — and that's expected: treat a null there as "no ownership record for this company," not as missing or broken data.
Documents you can order
| Document | Order by | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Faroe Islands Registration Extract Official TEKNINGARÚTSKRIFT registration extract from Skráseting Føroya. | register_extractregister_extract_official | Live |
| Faroe Islands Gazette Notice A company gazette notice PDF from Skráseting Føroya. | A document ID from the list operation | Live |
Documents with a shortcut are ordered directly by that name — for example register_extract. The rest are filings whose availability differs per company: call list documents first and order the ID it returns.

Gotchas
| Trap | What happens |
|---|---|
| Ownership only while registered | Ownership, shareholder and beneficial-owner data exist only for companies still on the current register. A company that has been struck off, gone bankrupt, or entered liquidation has no ownership record at all — the company report, shareholder graph and beneficial-owner report each say so explicitly rather than returning an empty list. Treat that explicit statement as the complete, honest answer for that company, not as missing or broken data. |
| Company as its own shareholder | A shareholder entry can be attributed to the company itself rather than a named owner. Don't read this as treasury stock or a public free float — the register makes no statement about either. |
| UBO percentage is borrowed | A beneficial-owner record has no percentage of its own. If that party also holds a disclosed direct stake, that stake's percentage is shown; otherwise none is given — never an estimate from chained stakes. |
| No ISO 20275 code | Most companies have no ISO 20275 legal-form code, since the two most common Faroese forms don't have one defined. The original Faroese abbreviation is always returned instead. |
| No incorporation date or activity | Company records have no incorporation date or industry/activity code at either register. Instead you get one free-text business-purpose entry. Don't infer incorporation date from the earliest filing — that's when a notice was filed, not when the company formed. |
| No financial statements | No source publishes annual accounts or financial statements for Faroese companies. A record may show filing dates, but never the figures themselves. |
| Open role vocabulary | Officer and board-role titles come from an open, still-growing vocabulary, including gendered forms (separate male/female titles for the same seat) and, on some companies, the same board seat published twice — once under a Faroese title and once under a Danish one, for the same person. Treat an unrecognized title as valid data to display as-is, not as a fixed, closed list of roles. |
Glossary
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
O.V.E. | Shown in place of a beneficial owner's name when the register found no one it could identify as owning or controlling the company — a deliberate finding, not a placeholder. |
Kurator | The court-appointed trustee who takes over a company's management once it has gone bankrupt. |
Likvidator | The liquidator appointed once a company enters liquidation, whether voluntary or ordered by the court. |
Ábyrgdarhavandi | The party the register holds responsible once a company has been referred to the court for compulsory dissolution — not an ordinary company officer. |
Eigari | Faroese for "owner" — labels an ownership relation, and the same text also carries the stake's percentage, e.g. "Eigari 49.0%". |
Veruligur Eigari | Faroese for "beneficial owner" — the register's own determination of who ultimately owns or controls the company. |
Nevndarformaður / Nevndarforkvinna | The male and female forms of the same board seat, Chairman and Chairwoman of the Board — one role, not two. |
Bestyrelsesmedlem / Bestyrelsesformand | Danish-language duplicates of the Faroese board-member and chairman titles. Where a company uses them, the same seat is published twice — once in each language — for the same person. |
Stjóri | Faroese for Director. |
Forstjóri | Faroese for Chief Executive Officer. |
Sp/F | Smápartafelag — the Faroese private limited company form, and the most common legal form on the register. |
ÍVF | Íverksetarafelag — a lighter-weight Faroese "entrepreneur company" form. |
P/F | Partafelag — a Faroese limited company form. |
Í/F | Íognarfelag — a Faroese partnership form. |
Felagið er strikað | The company has been struck from the register (closed). |
Felagið er farið í konkurs | The company has gone bankrupt. |
Felagið er sent skiftirættinum til tvingsilsavtøku | The company has been referred to the court for compulsory dissolution. |
Felagið er farið í sjálvbodna likvidatión / Felagið er koyrt í likvidatión av skiftirættinum | The company is being wound up in liquidation — voluntary in the first case, court-ordered in the second. |
