How to use Kausate in Australia — what you can call, which identifiers it uses, and which documents you can order
New to the API? Start with the jurisdictions overview, which explains how ordering, identifiers and documents work everywhere.
Company data here comes directly from Australian Business Register (ABR) and Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).
What you can call here
What each operation does is the same everywhere and is explained on the jurisdictions overview.

How to search
Start with company search and jurisdictionCode: "au". Pass the name as companyName, a registration number as companyNumber, or both to narrow the result. Here companyNumber is read as acn.
Fields
To say exactly what you mean, send an advancedQuery instead. Australia understands these fields:
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
name | Company name to search for. |
acn | Australian Company Number (9 digits). |
abn | Australian Business Number (11 digits). |
Examples
{ "jurisdictionCode": "au", "advancedQuery": { "name": "Telstra" }}Australia also accepts acn and abn.
Company identifiers
Search by passing the registration number as companyNumber — it is matched against the schemes this register can search on, so you do not name the scheme yourself. Not every scheme below is searchable; the rest label the values returned in a company’s identifiers.
| Identifier | Appears as | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Australian Company Number (ACN) Australian Company Number (ACN) - 9 digits, issued by ASIC to registered companies. For RACN-type entities this field carries the Australian Registered Body Number (ARBN). | au_acn | ^\d{9}$ |
| Australian Business Number (ABN) Australian Business Number (ABN) - 11 digits, issued by the Australian Business Register (ABR) to entities carrying on a business. | au_abn | ^\d{11}$ |
Identifier notes
- An ABN alone is not proof of incorporation: ASIC's company register (ACN) covers only companies, while the ABR issues an ABN to any entity carrying on a business — including sole traders and trusts that were never incorporated and have no ACN. Matching on an ABN alone does not tell you whether you are looking at a company.
- A foreign company, or an entity registered under a different Australian law, is identified not by an ACN but by an ARBN (Australian Registered Body Number) — a 9-digit number in exactly the same shape as an ACN. The two schemes cannot be told apart by format alone; the entity's legal form (surfaced as "Registered Australian Body") tells you which one you are holding.
- The ACN returned for a company is formatted with the conventional Australian spacing — three groups of three digits, e.g. "004 085 616" — rather than as an unbroken 9-digit string. Strip whitespace before comparing it to a value you already hold.
Documents you can order
| Document | Order by | Status |
|---|---|---|
| ASIC Current Company Extract Current company extract issued by ASIC, delivered as a PDF: officeholders, share capital, members, and charges. ASIC removed officeholder residential addresses from all extracts on 2026-02-02. | register_extractregister_extract_official | Live |
Documents with a shortcut are ordered directly by that name — for example register_extract.
Local notes
Gotchas
| Trap | What happens |
|---|---|
| Members only for proprietary companies | The register keeps a members section only for proprietary companies. A public company (including ASX-listed) gets an explicit "not applicable" result, not an empty list. |
| Top 20 members per class | The shareholder list returned for a company is never guaranteed complete — the register records only the top 20 members per share class, so a company with more holders than that in one class is missing the smaller ones, and percentages across the returned shareholders will not necessarily sum to 100%. |
| Registered holders, not UBOs | Shareholders are registered holders of record, not verified beneficial owners — there is no beneficial-ownership register. A "beneficially held" flag just reflects the register's own unverified statement. |
| Status vocabulary differs by register | Status vocabulary depends on the register: ACN entities carry company-register terms like "External administration" or "Strike-off in progress"; ABN-only entities (sole traders, trusts) show just "Active" or "Cancelled". |
| 'Cancelled' has two meanings | "Cancelled" doesn't always mean closed: for an ACN company it can mean the registration transferred to a different Australian law; for an ABN-only entity, the business number was deactivated. |
| GST sits on the ABN identifier | GST registration isn't a top-level field — it appears only as an extra on the ABN identifier entry, and is absent for companies with no ABN. |
| Alternative names mix types | Alternative names mix former legal names with separately registered trading/business names — filter by entry type if you need only one. |
| Shareholder type inferred from name | Company-vs-person classification for shareholders is inferred from name suffixes (PTY LTD, LLC, GMBH, similar foreign forms), not a verified flag — unusual names can end up miscategorized. |
| Officer addresses removed | Since 2026-02-02, the official company extract no longer includes officeholders' residential addresses. |
Glossary
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
External administration | The status used when an external administrator has taken over the company's affairs, usually due to insolvency — the company still exists and remains on the register. |
Strike-off in progress | The regulator has started removing the company from the register (typically for missed filings or fees), but the outcome is not final yet — the company is still on the register for now. |
Registered Australian Body | A company incorporated overseas, or registered under a different Australian law, that has separately registered to carry on business in Australia — identified by an ARBN rather than an ordinary ACN. |
ACT (GST status) | Currently registered for GST, Australia's goods-and-services tax — appears as the gstStatus value on a company's ABN identifier. |
CAN (GST status) | Was previously registered for GST but that registration has since been cancelled. |
NON (GST status) | Has never registered for GST. |
