Date precision
How full and partial dates appear in API responses
Dates in API responses have an original value from the source and, when the date can be parsed, a normalized value in ISO order. The normalized value keeps the precision the source supplied:
| Source precision | normalized example |
|---|---|
| Full date | 1975-07-21 |
| Month and year | 1975-07 |
| Year only | 1975 |
For example, a register that publishes only a person's birth month and year can produce this dateOfBirth:
{
"original": "07/1975",
"normalized": "1975-07"
}A missing day is never filled in. If a source value cannot be parsed, original is preserved and normalized is null.
