Company identifiers

Romania has no number-based search: find a company by name, then use the kausateId search returns. These schemes label the values that come back in a company’s identifiers.

IdentifierAppears asFormat
Romanian VAT Number
Romanian VAT identification number (cod de înregistrare în scopuri de TVA) - the CUI prefixed with 'RO', issued only while the entity is registered for VAT
ro_vat^RO\d{1,8}$
Romanian Registration Code
Romanian trade register registration code - J followed by 10 to 13 digits
ro_registration_code^J\d{10,13}$
Romanian CUI
Romanian Cod Unic de Identificare (CUI) - 1 to 8 digits
ro_cui^\d{1,8}$

Identifier notes

  • A Romanian registration code's shape depends on the entity type, not a single fixed pattern: a registered company carries a J-prefixed code (e.g. J1997008302407), while an individually authorized trader instead carries an F-prefixed, slash-separated reference (e.g. F35/902/2018). Treat it as a free-form register reference rather than validating it against one regular expression.
  • The Romanian VAT number is not independently issued — it is always the company's CUI with "RO" prefixed in front, and it is present only for the period the company is actually registered for VAT. A company can carry no VAT number at all, and one that later deregisters for VAT stops carrying it even though its CUI never changes.

Gotchas

TrapWhat happens
Coarse representative typesA representative carries only a coarse type — natural person, legal entity, or foreign branch — never an officer title like director or CEO.
Two disagreeing status sourcesCompany status can come from two sources that can legitimately disagree: the trade register's own legal status, and — only when the trade register reports none at all — the tax authority's fiscal-registration state as a fallback. The fallback describes tax standing, not legal existence: a company struck from the tax register can still be legally active in the trade register, and vice versa.
Missing statements are normalMany active companies have no filed annual financial statement for a given year; branches and sole traders never file one. An empty financials result isn't an error.
Unknown layouts return the yearA filing matching neither of the two known reporting-form layouts returns only the reporting year (and sometimes headcount), with no balance-sheet or income-statement figures, rather than failing.
Figures are absolute leiFinancial-statement figures are absolute RON (lei), not thousands — a filed net profit of 4,143,914,310 means that many lei. Don't assume unit-scaling from another jurisdiction.
Name split on the first wordA representative's name is published as one string, typically "SURNAME GIVEN NAME(S)", split on the first word: that word becomes the surname, the rest the given name(s); a single-word name is all surname.
Multiple offices, one typeA company can carry multiple registered offices, all tagged with the same address type — nothing distinguishes the current main address from a secondary or historical one.
NACE Rev. 2.1 taggingThe activity code is tagged NACE Rev. 2.1, reflecting Romania's January 2025 move to CAEN Rev. 3 (a transposition of NACE Rev. 2.1). An older code that predates the switch and doesn't resolve returns bare, with no scheme attached.
